Newcomer: Merryl by MS Todd O'Donnell

With the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl this year, I decided to create a faux-update image in the style of the official SSBB website. This is a mock-up of what Merryl's character image would look like (with the exception that she would be rendered in 3D, but since I lack any 3D modeling software, I did what I could). The full "update" is currently still in progress, but will be posted when it is finished. There are some slight adjustments from her last SSB (Melee) stylization, most notible is the "Wild Aces" text around the tattoo on her right arm, which may become part of her overall design much like the bandoleer belt from the Melee stylization has. Her shoes have also gotten a make-over, now sporting some red patches and gray soles.

No matter where Merryl goes, trouble always seems to find her, even at hundreds of feed in the air. Here she managed to get into a fight atop an aircraft climbing into the sky, she better wrap things up before the air pressure out there gets too low. No need to worry though, she always pulls through in situations like this. The sketch was originally drawn way back in 2005, but I never got around to finishing it until earlier this year., some slight updates were added from her Brawl appearance of course. The photo used for the background was actually taken during a recent trip.

Merryl Smash Bros Character Panel by MS Todd O'Donnell

The original idea was to add a little more to Merryl's basic appearance, but as it progressed, it also became an attempt to imitate the stylization characters are given in the Super Smash Bros video game (ie, more detail, a slightly more realistic appearance, ect). This is also a throwback to some SSB stylized character drawings I had made years ago before I came to Jaxpad or even VCL (of course those were incredible crude in comparisson).

Merryl's Alternate Colors by MS Todd O'Donnell

When I made the previous image, I also made these alternate colors as well (all done with layers so they are exactly alike). The colors go as following, Red Team (also themed after her Rush outfit's color scheme), Blue Team, Green Team, and Anti-Merryl. One extra note, the emblem used for Gunsmoke Angel is the Wild Aces Logo (aka Mr. O'Donnell's trademark Mad Hatter-style hat).

Kangaroo Crossover by MS Todd O'Donnell

I've been wanting to do this pic for a while, both are roos with a strong love for firearms and incredible sharpshooter skills. Plus, roos with guns rock.

Finally got around to making a reference sheet for Merryl. It's been a long time since I've made one, and since my characters' designs have evolved over the years, it's time for some new ones. This should help any future Merryl artists, being as she's the star of Gunsmoke Angel and one of the most drawn Mad Space characters. All her updated features are included as well as specific detail information to hopefully make things easier for everyone and avoid any confusion. {Updated 6-19-07} I decided the bandoleers (originally from her SSB stylization) will be part of her overall design, and so I added them to her reference image.

Rocky's Casual Attire by MS Todd O'Donnell

It's about time I got around to designing what Rocky wears when she's off duty, she can't go around in her uniform 24/7. Picking out casual attire for her wasn't exactly a easy task, her personality pretty much ommitted most outfits since she wouldn't wear anything too loose, tight, revealing, messy, informal, loud or flashy. Luckily, I stumbled across a pattern for vests that had this outfit which suits her perfectly, casual yet still has that formal/professional feel that perfectly suits her. I'm quite pleased with this one, purple looks good on her (and if you look closely, you can see the stripes on her vest).

Rush Outfit Merryl by MS Todd O'Donnell

Continuing the Rush theme, here's Miss Crosshair's Rush profile. If you've seen the Rush Merryl sketch I recently posted at VCL (http://us.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Todd-O%27Donnell/Sketches/MerMyt.JPG), you'll notice something's missing in this pic, namely the sleaveless jacket worn over her bra top. As I mentioned before, that was added after this pic was drawn, but would be worn open so the front are would still be visible. Her board, the Red Dragon, is themed after the long Chineses dragons (remember, Merryl is Chinese, not Australian) and was made in Illustrator.

Vector Rocky, Front View by MS Todd O'Donnell

Part one of a three part vector character project for class, the project is to create three views of the same character using Illustrator. I chose Rocky since she is the main face of MS, not to mention Merryl might be a tad too risque for class purposes anyway. I decided to go with her alternate Rush outfit over her standard IGPD uniform since I thought it'd be more interesting to draw, plus I just really like the design. I'm pretty pleased with this one, especially how Illustrator produced the background.

Vector Rocky, Back View by MS Todd O'Donnell

Second of the three part Illustrator vector character assignment. I used the same sketch for this and the front view, and added all the details, such as face, clothing details, hair, tail, ect. all digitally via Illustrator. I also got lucky and found images that were from two opposite angles of the same area to use as the background to add to the continuity. All in all, I'm quite impressed with both pics, being my first real use of Illustrator (which'll be a part of my tools from now on).

Merryl Rail Grind by MS Todd O'Donnell

Been a long time since I uploaded the original sketch for this pic, but it's finally finished. I honestly forgot what the original idea was for this pic when I sketched it last year. And so the pic evolved into this, Merryl grinding along a rail at breakneck speeds over a city skyline. I added some distortion to her outlines to emphisize speed, as well as the big motion blur of the background. I also updated the sketch a tad as well, most notibly is the extention of her trademark headband (which was much shorter when I first drew this). A bit different than my usual works, this one was actually done for the Further Confusion convention to be projected in the dance room. I wasn't able to make it to that convention, but it was supposed to be put up in laser lights (hence the funky coloring).
